March 22, 2011 C-1 981-010/Trapper Mine RDZ
Twenty-six ponds were inspected. Several ponds associated with CDPS monitoring sites were inspected: Far East
Buzzard, Coyote,No Name#5R,Johnson#IOR,West Pyeatt#2,Middle Pyeatt#3, East Pyeatt#3,Grouse#2,
Sage#2, Oak#2,Middle Flume#3, East Middle Flume, East Flume, and Horse.
Of the inspected CDPS ponds, the following were discharging during the inspection: No Name#5R,Johnson
#IOR, West Pyeatt#2,East Pyeatt#3,Oak#2,Middle Flume#3,and East Middle Flume. The Industrial Waste
pond(not a CDPS pond)was also discharging. Discharge from all ponds except Oak#2 was clear.
No serious problems were identified with any of the ponds, but some maintenance items were identified during the
inspection. It was determined that the following ponds require sediment removal: No Name#4, East Pyeatt#1,
and East Flume. Due to high water levels, it was difficult to determine the level of sediment in many of the ponds.
The dozer basin above the Oak Gulch ponds requires cleaning. The flume at Oak Gulch#2 requires cleaning; it is
covered with branches and mud. The flume at East Middle Flume requires maintenance as the upstream end has
experienced erosion. The Coyote Gulch dam has burrow holes on the downstream toe that should be filled.
GENERAL MINE PLAN COMPLANCE:
At the K Strike Pit,the Molly Brown dragline was casting spoil on March 22, 2011 but idle on March 23,2011.
On March 23rd a back hoe was loading coal(12 Seam)into a truck.
Every day of the inspection, the Baby Doe dragline was casting spoil to the west end of the F Pit.
The mine was found to be in general compliance with the permit.
ROADS—Rule 4.03:
Many roads were observed during the inspection, including the Life of Mine Road, the Middle Ash Road, the
West Ash Road, the Middle Z Road, the K1 Road, the Z3 Road, and the D/E Haul Road. All active haul roads
were stable and were functioning as permitted at the time of the inspection. The D/E road was very muddy;
however it is not currently being used as a haul road.
Maintenance of roads was observed during the inspection, including the use of a scraper and watering for dust.
The road to the Oak Gulch ponds was very muddy and was washed out where it crosses the stream(there is no
culvert at this location). This will need to be addressed after spring runoff season.
Several ditch-outs were inspected along the Life-of-Mine Road, and no significant erosion or other problems were
observed.
Several culverts were inspected(mostly 30-inch or larger pipes along the Life of Mine Road), and the following
were found to require cleaning: SA (east pipe, upstream side),AE10 (upstream),and the culvert downstream of
No Name#2 pond(upstream). Culvert AE-11 (in East Middle Flume drainage)is a 30-inch culvert,not an 18-
inch culvert as noted on PAP Map 51.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 8
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 3 of 12
