• interpretation of Feature 4-3 as a hearth (Hearth 5 on b7ap 3) is hardly
questionable. When considered along with its surrounding cobble layer
(located to the east of the feature and on the opposite, south, side of
the trench), Feature 4-3 can jwtifiably be advanced as the typical
example of the excavated features so far discussed. That this feature
contained afire for sane length of titre is attested by the fire-reddened
slabs, the extremely blackened dirt within the interior, and the only
slightly less blackened matrix immediately outside. A profile drawing
was made of both the north wall and the south wall of the unit at the
oanpletion of excavations to the 40 an level (Appendix: Figures 27 and
28). Photographs were taken of both profiles (Appendix: Figures 26 and
29) after the contents of Feature 4-3 were remved. A number of pollen
samples were obtained fran the north wall profile and from the interior
of the feature. Although large piecos of charcoal were not visible, a
sample of fire-blackened earth was ramved for radianetric dating pur-
poses fran the interior of Feature 4-3.
• F~
d
ti
i
5
Th
f
i
l
i
f
i
ccava
on Un
t
.
e ex
stence o
a c
rcu
ar concentrat
on o
san
stone
rocks in the middle of a two-tracked dirt mad necessitated the excavation
of this apparent cultural feature to determine its nature before it is
further impacted. A 2 x 1 m size unit was placed over, and enclosing,
this feature and the entire area outside of the rocks was excavated to a
depth of 10 an below PGS (P.ppendix: Figures 30 and 31)• A total of 0.10
cubic meters of dirt was removed fran those areas to the east and west of
the rock con~r:tration. No artifacts whatsoever were observed or
collected on the surface or in the 10 an of material excavated. For this
reason, plus the fact that the constituent rocks of the concentration did
not, for the most part, continue any deeper than 10 an, nor did they show
any evidence of burning (fire-cracking or -reddening), this concentration
is interpreted as being non-cultural.
F7ccavation Unit 6. This 2 x 1 m unit was opened to the east of EU2, thus
extending the size of EUL to an area of 3 meters x 2 meters and further
• exposing features recognized on the extreme eastern side of EU2.
