~ccavation Unit 3. E[J3 adjoins EU2 on the diagonal north and west. •
Approximately ecP:dvalent areas of 50 an x 200 an on the north and south
sides of backhce trench 1 were excavated to a depth of approximately
40 on below PGS; a total of 0.80 cubic meters of dirt was reiroved fra-n
EU3. Artifacts recovered fran this unit are very sparse, sFarser than
both EU1 and EU2. This paucity of artifacts, however, has been partially
ameliorated by th.e existence of at least three cultural features
(Appendix: Figures 21 and 23). Feature 3-2 is a well defined sani.circle
(the rsnainder continues into the north wall) of upright sandstone slabs
which has been defined as a hearth (Hearth 1 on Map 3). E~tposed on
the Satre level anal to the east of Feature 3-2 is a layer of angular sand-
stone cobbles, Feature 3-4. This cobble layer probably continues to the
north outside of the unit and probably had surrounded Feature 3-2 on the
south side before its removal during the digging of backhoe trench 1.
On the opposite side of the trench is Feature 3-3, a circular arrange-
ment of large and very large upright sandstone slabs. This feature,
defined as a hearth (Hearth 3 on Map 3), was partially exposed in the
south wall of backhce trench 1, that exposure being the primary reason •
for the location of EU3. Feature 3-2 was bisected along an east-west
axis and pollen and charcoal samples were removed fran the interior.
Upon oar~>letion of excavations in EU3, a stratigraphic profile of the
north wall was drawn and photographed to show the relationships of the
cultural and natural layers (Appendix: Figure 24 ) and charwal and
pollen samples were obtained from that profile.
E;accavation Unit 4. Areas of 60 cm x 200 an and 40 an x 200 an on the
north and south sides, respectively, were excavated to a depth of
approximately 40 an below PCS; a total of 0.80 cubic meters of dirt was
removed fran this last 2 x 2 m size unit. Consistent with the pattern
already established for the other three units, only a very sna11 number
of artifacts has been recovered fran EU4. This unit is distinguished--
as other units have been-by the existence of a distinctive cultural
feature. Feature 4-3 is a neatly defined semicircle (the other, south,
half of the feature was removed by the backhoe) of large, upright sand- •
stone slabs with a slab bottom (Appendix: Figures 25 and 26).
