• Excavation Unit 1. Approximate areas of 30 an x 200 an and 80 an x 200 on
on the east and west sides of backhoe trench 4, respectively, were excava-
ted to a depth of approximately 55 on belay PCB; a total of approximately
1.20 cubic meters of dirt was re;mved. Artifactual materials are sparse
in this unit. The only notable cultural manifestation was exposed at a
depth of about 55 on below PGS (Appendix: Figures 19 and 20) . Feature 1-3
can be described as a loose concentration of angular sandstone cobbles
scattered across the oantral portion of the excavation unit. This fea-
tore appears to continue into the unexcavated area to the east of the
unit. Once Feature 1-3 was sketched and photographed, the constituent
rocks were removed and excavations continued to a depth of approximately
70 cm below PCS. The absence of any further materials was sufficient to
coase excavations at this level.
Excavation Unit 2. Areas of 70 an x 200 an and 50 an x 200 on on the
west and east sides of backhoe trench 4, respectively, were excavated to
a depth of approximately 40 an belay PGS; a total of 0.96 cubic meters
• of dirt was removed. Again, artifactual materials recovered fx~n this
unit are sparse but slightly more abundant than those recovered in EU1.
A concentration of angular sandstone cobbles was exposed at ca. 40 an
below PGS and has been differentiated into two separate features
(Appendix: Figures 21 and 22) . Feature 2-3 is a concentration of cobbles,
at least one of which is 3-4 times larger than the remainder, located in
the extreme northwest corner of the EU; it appears to continue to the
north and west into unexcavated azeas. This feature has been defined as
a probable firehearth (labelled. as Heazth 2 on Map 3). Feature 2-4,
on the other hand, constitutes the remainder of the cobbles scattered
across the excavation unit and continuing beyond the east wall. For this
latter reason, EU6 was opened to the east of EU2 to verify the existenco
of additional cultural materials; excavations in EU6 are discussed in
more detail below. None of the rocks in Feature 2-4 were raroved in
order to facilitate the interpretation of their patterning once the
possible manifestations in EU6 were exposed. Pollen samples were taken
• from both the interior of Feature 2-3 and outside the hearth frun
Feature 2-4; a charcoal sample for radiocarbon dating was removed fran
Layer 1 above Feature 2-3.
31
