Because one of ttie expressed purposes of these mitigation efforts was •
to date r-adicmetrically the features at 5rtP139, major efforts were
expended to obtain samples (usually charcoal) for radiocarbon dating
fran as many locz.tions as possible. Pollen samples were also taken
fnzn interpreted occupational surfaces, features, or stxatigraphic
profiles even though no provisions were made to have these samples
analyzed at this tune. It is hoped that these pollen samples eventually
can be analyzed and used to interpret paleoenvironmental cronditions or
patterns of prehistoric subsistence.
A photodocisrentary re~rd of all phases of excavation was obtained using
black and white and wlor photography. Particular attention was
directed towards taking numerous photos fran various angles of all
cultural features and profiles to enhance and/or supplement other
illustrations. This was done so as to provide the reader with a clear
and accurate visual picture of the various o~g~onents of each excavation
unit, to enable the reader to "see" what the excavators "saw." •
Results. A total of six excavation units was laid out and excavated at
SFFP139. The horizontal and vertical dimensions of matPSials actually
removed depended on the ~nfiguration of the backhoe trench and depth
to a discernible feature in each limit. In all units, the primary empha-
sis was to expose, sample, sketch, and photograph those features visible
in the trench walls or exposed but reburied during the trenching activi-
ties. The time and physical ~nstmints imposed upcm the project
limited severely our ability in sane instances to explore fully the
horizontal extent of cultural manifestations in most of the wets;
excavation unit 6 is an exception to this limitation for reasons that
are explained below.
General results fran each excavation unit are discussed individually.
Specific discussions of exposed features, rewvered artifacts, and dating
results are incorporated within the Analysis section.
•
30
