• stratigraphic relationships. The general locations of these profiles
relative to the excavation units are depicted in Map 3.
Testing and Remxding Procedures. All excavation units were dug in
natural levels using shovel, traaels, and brushes. All excavated
materials were passed through a ;-inch metal mesh screen. In most
cases, two individuals wo~ced together in an excavation unit: one
person shoveling or traaelirr3 while the seo~d handled the screening
operations, the latter carefully inspecting the screen for cultural
materials.
The excavation units were dug in quadrants so that some degree of oon-
trol over the provenien~s of screened artifacts mould be maintained.
The materials excavated from each quadrant were screened separately
fran the other quadrants. All lithic dPbitage revered in the screen
was collectively bagged according to quadrant and natural level. The
• locations of in situ artifacts, as well as cultural features and ancil-
lary specimens (C14 and pollen samples), were determined with two hori-
zontal measurements from adjacent side walls and a vertical measurement
below an established datum.
In all of the excavation units, the highest of the four turner stakes
was used as a vertical datum. A string and line level were used to
establish a datum plane, measurements fran this plane to the object(s)
taken with a metric tape, and re~rded in centimeters Belay Dattan (B.D.).
The measurements and descriptions of all itats were recorded on appro-
priate Feature or Field Specimeen re~rd forms.
Plan view maps were drao-m at the top of each natural layer with all
objects, cultural or natural, accurately plotted. Profile drawings of
one or more of the side walls in each excavation unit were carefully
drawn at the ~n~pletion of excavation in each unit so as to illustrate
stratigraphic relationships between natural and cultural manifestations.
•
29
