extension also allowed further exposure of Feature 3-3. The: total area •
of EU6 was excavated to 40 an belay PGS, thus resulting in the removal
of 0.80 cubic metiers of dirt. Feature 6-3, defined as a probable hearth
(Hearth 4 on P7ap 3) was completely exposed: the majority of this
circular concentration of large sandstone slabs lies within EU6 but the
extreme western portion is contained in E[J2 (Appendix: Figures 21 and
37) . A d~armal sample for radianetric dating was obtained fran the
interior of Feature 6-3. The juxtaposition of EIJ6 with the southwest
c;uaclrant of EU3 provided a definition of the southern extent: of Feature
3-3.
With the oatq~leti.on of excavations in EU6, tine test excavations stage
of the mitigative efforts at S1ZP139 was finished. Topsoil removal and
the archaeglogical monitoring of these operations followed immediately.
Procedures. The purpose of this stage of mitigative operations at •
SKP139 was to have archaeologists oversee the removal of topsoil by
Seneca Coal Mine personnel. This procodure was specified in order to
insure either that no additional cultural materials were exposed or,
if suds materials did occ.~ur•, that they were recorded properly. Topsoil
removal was to be confined to that area where testing operations had
deteanined that buried cultural deposits were frost likely to occur.
The location of this area of approximately 90 meters by 80 meters is
delineated in t4ap 2.
The first phase of topsoil removal consisted of removal of all brush in
the impact area. This operation was performed by a bulldozer (Fig. 6 )
and begun and a~q~leted in a single day. The follaaing phase of opera-
tions involved the actual displaoanent of topsoil by a motor grader
(Fig. 7 ). This procedure involved a series of parallel swaths by the
machine, removing approximately 5 am of topsoil during each swath until
bedrock was reached, and piling the excavated dirt in windmas on the •
34
