Class X Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 367
The site currently lies outside of the mine permit bound and will not be affected. In the future
h Y P 'Y
if the site occurs within an expanded project boundary, there will be no effect because the site is
recommended as not eligible for the NRfiP. Cultural resource clearance is recommended, with no
finther work.
6.2.33 Site 5MF4006
Site Type Cairn
Legal Locatio NWSWNWNE, Section 13, T3N, R94W
Landowner BLM
Site Dimensio 3.5 x 3.0 in
Site Description Site 5MF4006 occurs in the southeastern portion of the current Colowyo Collom
Mine project and was originally recorded in June of 1995 by MAC for the Colowyo Coal Company
1995 lease and exploration areas: Class III cultural resource inventory. The site was described as
a large sandstone boulder cairn or collapsed enclosure heavily coated with green and orange lichen.
The cairn was located at 7,945 ft (2,422 m) on a high isolated small knoll that commands an
excellent view in all directions, especially the Wilson Creek valley below and to the southeast
(Figure 6.224). The long axis of the cairn was aligned on a 113° bearing, and it measured 250 cm
long by 175 cm wide by 80 cm in height. The rocks were piled higher on the western side of the
cairn, and the interior of the cairn was recessed but with rocks on the ground surface. Rocks that
made up the cairn were thought to be of local origin because other rocks on the knoll are equally
lichen covered. Brown sandy residual sediments covered the ground surface between the sandstone
pavement, and there was no deposition. The vegetation consisted of low sagebrush, snowberry,
larkspur, and various grasses.
MAC recommended that the site needed more data because it may possess traditional cultural
significance for Native Americans as a TCP and be eligible for the NRHP under Criteria A or C.
•
47599
TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
