Class Iff Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 341
was noted at the time of recording. The site was judged to be associated with early twentieth - century
homesteading.
The current inventory found the stone feature to be smaller at 15 x 15 ft, although there does not
appear to be any change in the structural attributes since the previous recordings. The sandstone
blocks vary in size from 5 x 5 x 5 inches to 24 x 16 x 12 inches.
A review of the MTP and Historical Indices for T4N, R93 W, and the BLM website indicated that
Shelton Olson filed for and received a Homestead Entry Patent (HE No. 646121) on August 24,
1918, for 160 acres in the SE of Section 30. The Moffat County Court House records show that
Shelton Olson filed on the property November 18, 1921. This places the initial occupation during
the late Depression era.
NRHP 4 heibility Recommendation and Project Effect Site 5MF1657/2099 was recommended
( Je as not eligible for the NRHP during the 1983 and 1986 field evaluations and assessments. The
current inventory evaluation concurs with those recommendations. The site is an isolated habitation
feature that did not play a significant role in regional or local historic events or the settlement history
of northwestern Colorado in general or Moffat County in particular. It is not associated with an
individual (Shelton Olson) of extraordinary historic significance. It lacks physical integrity due to
its badly deteriorated condition, and it exemplifies no significant attributes of design, materials, or
workmanship. There are no associated artifacts or building materials extant at the site, and it is
unlikely that there is any potential for significant buried cultural material that would shed further
light on the property beyond that already obtained during the several recordings and subsequent
archival research.
The site currently lies within the mine permit boundary and may be affected by the undertaking.
Because the site is recommended as not eligible for the NRHP, there will be no effect from the
proposed project. Cultural resource clearance is recommended, with no further work.
•
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
