May Day and Idaho Mine Complex 112 (d) Permit Application <br />Topsoil from mining activities, prior to current application, was not salvaged because the topsoil is thin <br />and because of the inability to effectively utilize topsoil salvaging equipment on the steep slope. If top- <br />soil greater than 6 inches is encountered, this topsoil will be salvaged and handling will follow the me- <br />thods identified in Section 6.4.5(2) (c) and Rule 3.1.9. <br />For revegetation purposes, soil surfaces must remain rough and irregular to provide micro-catchments to <br />trap seeds and precipitation and micro-topography for seedling protection from sun and wind. <br />Run of Mine Rock Grading, Stabilization, and Compaction <br />Wildcat will isolate run of mine rock or mine adit development material above the water table within the <br />old mine workings or will encapsulate on the material on the existing mine bench as approved by DRMS <br />(Section 6.4.5(2)(a)). Upon closure, mine benches will be graded as specified in Section 6.4.5(2) (a) to <br />match surrounding landscape as much as practicable. Final grading will result in a stability of the <br />benches and not require compaction per Exhibit 6.5, Section 6.5(2). <br />Revegetation Plan <br />The purpose of this revegetation plan is to promote a native vegetative cover on the reclamation areas of <br />the affected lands that will help control erosion and provide an early successional system conducive to <br />development to match the surrounding mixed coniferous and deciduous montane forest. <br />List of Preferred Species of Grass Legumes Forbs Shrubs or Trees to be Planted <br />A standard reclamation grass seed mix approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Re- <br />source Conservation Service, for this area will be used at the May Day Idaho Mine Complex as presented <br />in Table E-2, Section 6.4.5(2)(f)(ii). Legumes and forbs are not included in this mix since the raw soils <br />may not support them immediately and the limited extent of the disturbance areas (less than one acre <br />each) will allow for colonization from the surrounding natural landscape. Shrubs and tree species to be <br />planted are provided in Table E-3, Section 6.4.5(2) (f) (iv). <br />:Method and Rates of Seeding and Planting <br />Shrubs and trees will be transplanted by hand into prepared holes at approximate 10 foot centers as speci- <br />fied in Section 6.4.5(2)(f)(iv). Seed will be broadcast by hand or hydro seed method on to the prepared <br />disturbed surfaces. Rate of broadcast for seed will be 10.4 PLS pounds per acre (Table E-2, Section <br />6.4.5(2) (f) (ii)). Ideally the reclamation areas should be planted first and then seeded as to avoid disrup- <br />tion of the seed during planting. If hand broadcast, the surface should be lightly rakes after seed broad- <br />cast to incorporate the seed into the top 1/2 inch of soil. <br />Estimated Availability of Viable Seeds in Sufficient Quantities of Proposed Species <br />The seed mix specified above should re readily available from commercial seed sources with ratings of <br />pounds of pure live seed (PLS) to determine viability of the seed (Section 6.4.5(2)(f)(ii) provides one rec- <br />ommendation).
