• Page 11
4.0 SURFACE WATER INVESTIGATION SAP
The surface water investigation SAP defines objectives and tasks for the surface water
investigation and provides guidance for all field work by defining the sampling and data-
gathering methods to be used.
4.1 Surface Water Investigation Task Objective
The surface water investigation will consist of grab sampling the Eagle Park Reservoir at a
specific location, sampling reservoir recharge from the two interceptor canals, and sampling
seepage from the sump located downgradient of the reservoir. The objective of sampling the
reservoir surface water and seep water is to provide representative sampling, based on sound
statistical principles, to ensure verification of contaminant source removal and attainment of in-
stream water quality standards prior to delivery to the East Fork of Eagle River (Colorado
Department of Health Water Quality Control Commission, 1994). Sampling of reservoir water
during reservoir filling and operation will also demonstrate the interaction (or lack of interaction)
• of water with the bottom materials in the reservoir. The objective of sampling the interceptor
canals is to establish the water quality of this recharge source prior to its interaction with the
reservoir materials. This information will indicate background concentrations for the reservoir
water.
4.2 Sample Locations and Frequency
Surface water samples from the Eagle Park Reservoir, the two interceptor canals, and seepage
from the sump below the Eagle Park Reservoir dam will be collected for chemical analysis.
Sampling of the Eagle Park Reservoir will occur beginning in the Fall of 1996 and continuing
until the Fall of 1997. Samples will be collected quarterly at a minimum, and monthly when
conditions allow access. During water delivery operations, surface water samples will be
collected quarterly, or during times that water quality is subject to changing conditions that may
affect water quality. The sampling schedule during water delivery will be finalized based on
assessment of the results of the 1996-1997 surface water sampling.
A sampling location will be established upgradient of the reservoir outlet for consistent sample
collection during filling and operation of Eagle Park Reservoir. One sampling location is
• sufficient for a reservoir of this size (approximately 59 acres). The sampling location will be
CO2078
PRIVILEGED AND CONFIDENTIAL
Environment
CAPROJECTS\6102.001M I176102.001(6/20t961 al
