Colowyo C-1981-019
15 June 10
Pg 6/12
Hydrologic Balance (cont.): -The Section 16 Perimeter Ditch was walked on the
inspection. This ditch collects runoff from the middle and north portion of the Section 16 Pit
and routes it to the Section 16 Pond. This ditch is a grass-lined ditch. The ditch was well
vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted.
-The South Collection Ditch was walked during the inspection. The South Collection Ditch
collects runoff from the Section 16 Pit north of the Section 16 Fill all the way to the Prospect
watershed. Water from the South Collection Ditch flows into the Prospect Pond (via the
drainage below the Prospect Ditch). The ditch is a rock and/or grass-lined ditch depending
on the grade. The grass-lined portions are well vegetated and stable and the rock-lined
portions are also stable. No erosional problems were noted in the ditch at the time of the
inspection. There was a small spoil spring noted at a coal outcrop in the drainage to the
Prospect Pond (where it meets up with the South Collection Ditch). There was no real flow
from the spoil spring but the area was wet. **See pictures at the end of this report.**
- The short (approximately 2,000 foot) unnamed ditch segment north of the Prospect
Pond (that carries the remaining Prospect watershed runoff to the Prospect Pond)
was walked during the inspection. This ditch segment is a grass-lined ditch. It was
well vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted at the time of the
inspection.
- The East Side Collection Ditch was walked during the inspection. This ditch collects
the runoff from the Gulch A watershed south of the Gulch A Ditch. It empties into the
Gulch A Ditch (and, ultimately, the Gulch A Pond) at approximately station 19+00.
This ditch is both grass-lined and riprapped. There was good vegetation in the ditch
and the areas of riprap remained stable. No erosional problems were noted in the
ditch. There were three spoil springs noted in the East Side Collection Ditch. The first
of these springs was below the ditch approximately 10 feet. It was basically a wet
spot that went approximately 15 feet down the hill then dried up. The second spring
was in the ditch's upslope cut and was basically a muddy area approximately five
feet in diameter. The third spring, while not actually flowing at the time of the
inspection, did have water flow approximately 200 feet down the ditch from its
location. These three spoil springs are typical of the other springs that have been
seen on inspections over the past several years. In the 2010 Midterm Review and the
2009 Annual Hydrology Report review the Division has requested that Colowyo
address these spoil springs in both the Probable Hydrologic Consequences section of
their permit and in their Annual Hydrology Report. **See pictures and Spoil Spring
Map at the end of this report.**
- The Streeter South Side Ditch was walked during the inspection. This ditch collects a
small amount of water from the northeast edge of the Gulch A watershed and from
the south side of the Streeter watershed and carries it to the Streeter Gulch Ditch
(and, ultimately, into the Streeter Pond. This ditch runs across the upper portion of the
face of the Streeter Fill and dumps the water into the Streeter Gulch Ditch at
approximately station 10+00. The Ditch is a grass-lined and riprapped ditch. It was
well vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted. No spoil springs
were noted in the Streeter South Side Ditch.
