Colowyo C-1981-019
15 June 10
Pg 5/12
Hydrologic Balance (cont.): - The portion of the Taylor Tributary Ditch that was
constructed in 2009 remains stable and in good condition. There is some sediment in
the ditch from the spring runoff but the ditch is open and water should easily be able
to flow in the ditch. The water from the Taylor Tributary Ditch flows into the East Taylor
Pond. There were no erosional problems noted in the ditch at the time of the
inspection. The contour ditches in the 2009 West Pit reclamation area, which route
flow from the 2009 West Pit reclamation area (WP014) into the Taylor Tributary Ditch,
remain stable. Based on the 2010 reclamation schedule, Colowyo should continue
the Taylor Tributary Ditch to approximately station 45+00. **See pictures at the end of
this report.**
- The Final East Pit Ditch and the North Tributary, East Pit Ditch both remain stable.
There is a small amount of sediment in these ditches from the spring runoff but overall
they are clear and appear to be functioning as designed. There is some vegetation
beginning to grow in these ditches. There were no erosional problems noted in these
ditches at the time of the inspection. These ditches join together at approximately
station 1+00 of the Final East Pit Ditch and flow into the South Collection Ditch (which
ultimately flows into the Prospect Pond). **See pictures at the end of this report.**
- The lower portion of the Prospect Ditch, which was constructed during the 2009
reclamation season, remains stable. There is very little sediment in the lower portion
of this ditch, probably due to its steeper grade. No erosional problems were noted in
the Prospect Ditch at the time of the inspection. Based on a review of Map 29 (Spoil
Grading South Area) and Map 41(Watershed Boundaries for Hydrologic Modeling),
Colowyo will complete the middle section of the Prospect Ditch during the 2010
reclamation season. Following completion of the Prospect Ditch Colowyo will be
required to submit a certified as-built drawing of the ditch to the Division in the form
of a Technical Revision. **See pictures at the end of this report.**
- The Section 28 and Section 29 Collector Ditches were walked during the inspection.
These ditches route water from the South Taylor Pit into the Section 28 Pond. These
ditches will ultimately be grass-lined ditches in most locations. There was very little, if
any, growth in these ditches at the time of the inspection. Colowyo will need to
closely monitor these ditches and reseed them as necessary. There is a portion of
each ditch that was relatively steep where Colowyo used a plastic liner to help
control erosion. There is one place where this plastic liner has been ripped in the
Section 28 Collector Ditch. Colowyo will need to repair this portion of the liner to
keep water from flowing under the liner and causing erosional problems. The Section
28 Collector Ditch did have water flowing in it, based on the sediment that was
deposited on portions of the plastic liner. **See pictures at the end of this report.**
- The entire length of the Section 16 Pond Ditch was walked during the inspection.
This ditch is a grass-lined ditch that was constructed to carry runoff from the Section
16 Pit to the Section 16 Pond, The Ditch was extended with the approval of Technical
Revision 71 (approved on 20 August 2008) to collect runoff from the X-Pod area of
the Section 16 Pit. The older portion of the ditch was well vegetated, while there was
little vegetation on the ditch extension. Colowyo will need to monitor the ditch
extension and reseed as necessary. The entire ditch was stable and no erorional
problems were noted.
