Colowyo C-1981-019
12 Apr 10
Pg 2/4
Hydrologic Balance: - The Streeter Pond (NPDES 001 A) was full and discharging
through the weep hole at the time of the inspection. There was a small amount of
water flowing into the pond from the ditch along the north side of the Streeter Fill.
The discharge into Goodspring Creek looked clear. The pond embankment was well
vegetated and stable at the time of the inspection and no erosional problems were
noted.
- The Prospect Pond (NPDES 007A) contained water approximately six feet below the
top of the discharge pipe and was discharging through the weep hole on the riser.
There was no water flowing into the pond from the Prospect watershed. The
discharge looked clear but the water in the pond looked dirty. Ryan indicated that
he sampled the pond the previous week for suspended solids but not for settleable
solids. When the water looks dirty like it did the day of the inspection, the Division
recommends that Colowyo also sample for settleable solids. The reason is that if the
discharge is the result of any inflow into the pond from precipitation of snowmelt
within the previous 48 hours, Colowyo can claim the alternate limit of <0.5ml/L of
settleable solids if the pond exceeds the limit for suspended solids. Please refer to the
Colowyo CDPS Permit for more detail. There was a small amount of sediment at the
inlet of the pond, but there did not appear to be as much sediment as in previous
years. The pond embankment was well vegetated and stable and no erosional
problems were noted. **See pictures at the end of this report.**
- The West Pit Pond (NPDES 008A) contained a small amount of water approximately
eight feet from the top of the discharge pipe and was not discharging at the time of
the inspection. There was also some water in the presettling cell but that was not
discharging into the main pond. The pond embankment was well vegetated and
stable and no erosional problems were noted.
- The East Taylor Pond (NPDES 01 OA) contained water approximately six feet below
the top of the discharge pipe and a few inches below the weep hole and was not
discharging at the time of the inspection. There was no evidence that the pond has
discharged through the primary spillway this season. Colowyo will need to be diligent
in checking this pond for discharges since this is the first time water will be flowing into
the pond from the West Pit (prior to the West Pit reclamation in 2009 the pond used to
be blocked off and all of the water remained in the West Pit). There was no water
flowing into the pond (from the Taylor Tributary Ditch) from the 2009 reclamation area
in the West Pit at the time of the inspection. The pond embankment was well
vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted. **See pictures at the
end of this report.**
- The Section 28 Pond (NPDES 012A) was dry at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was fairly well vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were
noted at the time of the inspection. During last year's growing season it was noted
that there were several bare spots in the vegetation on the embankment. Based on
this assessment, Colowyo reseeded portions of the Section 28 Pond embankment in
the fall of 2009. While it is still too make a concrete determination regarding the
success or failure of these efforts, there is some promise. There was some new growth
beginning to emerge in the areas where the bare spots were noted. The vegetative
growth on this embankment will continue to be monitored.
