Wer I Sail Survey, New Horizon Mine <br />soil temperatures of 54 to 59 degrees F. Copernan soils have horizons of secondary <br />gypsum accumulation. <br />GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: l3mvdish soils are on mesas, benches, and <br />escarpments. Slopes range from 1 to 30 percent. The soil formed in residuum <br />derived dominantly from interbedded sandstone and shale. Elevation ranges from <br />5 to 7,300 feet The mean annual precipitation ranges from 9 to 15 inches.. <br />Mean annual temperature ranges from 40 to 50 degrees F. The frost -free season is <br />about 110 to 150 days. <br />GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Ninon, Clovis, and <br />Progresso soils. Pinion soils have bedrock at less than 20 inches is sojFS are <br />deep an have an argillic horizon. Progresso nails have an argilllc.horizon. <br />DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to very rapid runoff: <br />moderate permeability. <br />USE AND VEGETATION, They are used for limited livestock grazing and <br />1 wildlife habitat. The native vegetation is pinon pine and Utah juniper with an <br />understory of big sagebrush, galleta grass, Indian ricegrass, and Salina wildrye. <br />DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern Colorado.
