2009 Climax Mine Reclamation Report
Storke Yard
New reclamation in Storke Yard was completed on approximately 1,400 linear feet of new safety
berms constructed along the road down to the water treatment facility in 2009. The berms were
constructed using clean fill material. The berms and associated disturbance (0.47 acres) were
hydromulched and hydroseeded with a Biosol application of 1000 lbs/acre. This reclamation is
shown on Map 3 of 3.
Reclamation Maintenance
3 Dam
Approximately 1.5 acres of reclamation on the crest of 3 Dam were repaired in 2009 (Table 1).
Approximately 600 cubic yard of Class A biosolids was hauled and placed and the area was
broadcast seeded. Additionally, 5.11 acres of reclamation were repaired at the base of 3 Dam
(Table 1). Several seeps at the base of the dam required maintenance in 2009 disturbing
reclamation around the seeps and along the access routes. These areas were hydromulched and
hydroseeded with a Biosol application of 1000 lbs/acre. This reclamation is shown on Map 1 of
3.
5 Dam
Reclamation at the base of 5 Dam required repair after the installation of a new pumpback
pipeline in the fall of 2008. This area was approximately 2.93 acres in size and was regraded,
hydromulched, and hydroseeded with a Biosol application of 1000 lbs/acre (Table 1). This
reclamation is shown on Map 1 of 3.
Chalk Mountain Pipeline
The pipeline corridor that runs along the south edge of the Climax Mine was redisturbed in 2009
to install a new pipeline. This corridor was seeded and hydromulched by Slater Seeding. The
westernmost section of the pipeline corridor was not disturbed in 2009, but did receive some
construction traffic with the installation of the other pipeline. This area was also hydroseeded in
2009. In total 8.42 acres of reclamation maintenance was conducted on the Chalk Mountain
Pipeline Corridor in 2009 (Table 1). This reclamation is shown on Map 3 of 3.
E Dump
Several bare patches were repaired in the reclamation on the west facing side of E Dump. The
bare patches were though to be the result of the acid material in the substrate and erosion. Clean
topsoil was spread over each area and then it was hydromulched and hydroseeded. Biosol was
spread on one small area that was too difficult to access with the topsoil. In total 0.53 acres of
reclamation was completed (Table 1). This reclamation is shown on Map 3 of 3.
East Side Channel
Several small patches on the steep slopes along the East Side Channel required maintenance in
2009 due to slumping and erosion. The three areas that had experience the worst erosion were
repaired and replaced with rock drains (Table 1). Other areas were simply regraded and reseeded.
The red subsoil that was used to construct the channel slopes is very susceptible to erosion and
difficult to revegetate without amendment. Because of this, the entire slope on both sides of the
channel was hydroseeded, hydromulched and treated with Biosol. This area was 5.91 acres and
included the repair areas. This reclamation is shown on Map 2 of 3.
Habitat Management, Inc. 3 December 2009
