2009 Climax Mine Reclamation Report
Storke Yard
In addition to the new reclamation in the Storke Yard (described above), a small area of
reclamation was also repaired in 2009. A 0.12-acre spot near to the 5 Shaft was disturbed during
road maintenance activities. This area was hydromulched and hydroseeded with a Biosol
application of 1000 lbs/acre. This reclamation is shown on Map 3 of 3.
Arkansas River Project
The East Fork of the Arkansas River Channel Restoration Project was initiated in 2007. For the
first time since construction all run-off flows were allowed to run through the channel without.
diversion in 2009. Monthly inspections were conducted of the channel throughout the summer
to evaluate stream bank stability, flow levels, revegetation success, and erosion and identify
concerns. Monthly inspections also included the BMPs and sediment controls associated with
this project. The BMPs were installed in 2007 and included several hundred feet of silt fence
and straw wattles mostly around the west side of the project. In August 2009, it was determined
that the vegetation had established sufficiently in the reclamation area that the BMPs were no
longer needed to mitigate erosion and protect adjacent waterways from sediment deposition.
Thus, all BMPs associated with this project were removed.
Habitat Management also conducted revegetation success monitoring in 2009 for the US Army
Corps of Engineers. The project area was mapped and vegetation data were collected along
established transects to evaluate success of 2007 revegetation efforts.
Weed Control
In 2009, weed control was conducted via targeted herbicide application on Eagle Park, Robinson
Tailings Pond, McNulty Gulch (upper and lower), Searle Gulch, and around Mayflower tailings
pond. Weed control was also conducted at Jones Gravel Pit. A detailed Weed Report has been
submitted separately from this report.
Tree and Shrub Transplant Maintenance
Over 1,500 trees and shrubs were transplanted throughout the reclamation areas at Climax
between 2005 and 2007. As these trees have grown it has been necessary to remove root ball ties
and stakes after the trees have established. In 2009, the ties and stakes were removed from all
trees planted in 2007.
Habitat Management, Inc. 4 December 2009
