STORMWATER MANAGEML i PLAN 2/20/09
Maryland Creek Ranch
2. DESCRIPTION OF INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES AT MINE SITE
There is a sand and gravel mining and processing operation at this site. Ready mix dry batch
concrete and hot mix asphalt plants are also located within the site boundaries. An office and
scale exist on the north side of the site. The mining plan and reclamation plan have been
approved both by the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (DRMS) and the
Summit County Board of County Commissioners.
STRIPPING
Topsoil and overburden are removed in advance of mining, and the materials are hauled from
the removal site and/or stockpiled. Overburden and topsoil stockpiles may be in the form of
berms that are routinely revegetated to stabilize them.
STOCKPILING
Topsoil and overburden will be stockpiled in the form of earthen berms as noted on the site
map. All topsoil and overburden stockpiles will be revegetated. Raw materials are stockpiled
for future processing and sales. Processed-sand and gravel products are stockpiled for sales.
EXCAVATION
The moist or dry raw material (unprocessed sand and gravel) is excavated by draglines, front
end loaders, and/or backhoes. The material may either be stockpiled for future processing or
transported directly to the processing plant by conveyors or haul trucks. The excavation will
maintain an appropriate set-back distance away from the ditches, wells, and pipelines, although
some conveyance structures may be relocated to facilitate mining operations.
PROCESSING -CRUSHING, SCREENING, and WASHING
Processing consists of different stages, depending on the desired product(s). Most material is
fed into a crusher, then sent through a screening process, where it is separated into different
sizes. Crushing and screening may be repeated depending on the end product. Most material
is then washed to separate the fines from the desired product. The product wash water will be
directed through settling ponds, which allows the fines to settle out, and the water to be recycled
and continuously reused.
PRODUCTION - CONCRETE and ASPHALT
A ready mix dry batch concrete plant and a hot mix asphalt plant are both located with the
processing area. These plants are operated on an as needed basis, but typically the ready mix
dry batch concrete plant operates twelve (12) months per year. The hot mix asphalt plant will
typically operate from April through November.
RECLAMATION
When the mining operation has been completed, the pit will be reclaimed according to the
approved DRMS mining and reclamation permit.
2
