Colowyo C-1981-019
17 Dec 2009
Pg 2/5
Hydrologic Balance: - The Section 16 Pond (NPDES 009A) was inaccessible at the time
of the inspection due to snow. It is anticipated that this pond will remain inaccessible
until late spring or early summer.
- The Gossard Pond (NPDES 003A) contained water approximately three feet below
the discharge pipe and was not discharging. The pond embankment was covered
with a small amount of snow but remains well vegetated and stable. The two cell
concrete sump that was built several years ago was hit by a loader and the left side
cell has cracked. The damage appears to be more superficial and the sump
remains stable at the time of the inspection. This sump has done a good job in
keeping sediment out of the pond.
- The Rail Loop Pond (NPDES 006A) was almost dry at the time of the inspection. This
pond contains a large amount of sediment and is scheduled to be cleaned this
winter. The pond embankment was covered with a small amount of snow but
remains well vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted.
- The West Pit Pond (NPDES 008A) was dry at the time of the inspection. The
presettling pond at the inlet of the West Pit Pond was also dry. The pond
embankment was covered with several inches of snow but appeared to be well
vegetated and stable.
- The East Taylor Pond (NPDES 01 OA) was dry at the time of the inspection. The
embankment was covered with several inches of snow but appeared to be well
vegetated and stable. Runoff from the recently reclaimed West Pit will flow from the
Taylor Tributary Ditch into the East Taylor Pond. This will be the first time that runoff
from the West Pit will flow into this pond.
- The West Taylor Pond (NPDES 011 A) was inaccessible due to drifting snow on the
access road. The West Taylor Pond will probably remain inaccessible until late spring
or early summer.
- The Section 28- Pond (NPDES 012A) was dry at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was covered with several inches of snow but appeared to remain
stable at the time of the inspection. The embankment was reseeded this fall
because of the rather sparse vegetative cover.
- Sump 2 was dry at the time of the inspection. The sump was covered with snow but
appeared to be stable.
- Sump 3 contained water approximately one foot below the top at the time of the
inspection. The sump was covered with snow but appeared stable.
- Sump 4 was completely covered with snow at the time of the inspection. The sump
appeared to be stable.
- Sump 5 was also completely covered with snow at the time of the inspection. The
sump also appeared to be stable.
NOTE: These sumps are not permitted pond or impoundment structures but are best
management practices for controlling sediment and runoff from the haul road.
- The Gulch A Pond (NPDES 004A) was inaccessible at the time of the inspection due
to snow.
