•
41
October 2004 -33-
6.1 Destructive Testing
043 -2170
Golder selected destructive test locations based on Poly - Flex's completion of approximately
142,9151ineal feet of welding, various working conditions, and on seaming observations
(e.g., suspicion of a defective weld or welder). _ Poly -Flex obtained and tested 296 fusion seam
destructive samples and 31 extrusion seam destructive samples during the installation of the
geomembrane in the Phase IVc OSA.
Poly -Flex constructed approximately 138,619 lineal feet of fusion welded seams, and 4,296 lineal feet
of extrusion welded seams. The specified frequency of destructive testing was one test per 500 lineal
feet of weld or one test per day. Golder identified and Poly -Flex obtained destructive samples from
the geomembrane panel seams at a frequency of one destructive test sample per 468 lineal feet of
fusion welded seams, and one per 139 lineal feet of extrusion welded seams. The test frequency
exceeded project requirements (one test per 500 lineal feet of seam).
Field destructive testing of seams consisted of testing ten I -inch wide coupons, five of which were
tested for peel, and five of which were tested for shear. Poly -Flex tested the inside and outside tracks
of the fusion welds for peel. Poly -Flex performed all destructive tests on -site using a field
tensiometer, and Golder observed and documented all tests.
The specified acceptance criteria for 80 -mil textured LLDPE to 80 -mil textured LLDPE shear tests
was that four of the five coupons tested must have an ultimate strength of at least 112 pounds per
pulling inch (ppi) prior to yield. The specified acceptance criteria for peel tests was that four of the
five coupons tested must have ultimate strength of at least 96 ppi and achieve a Film Tear Bond
(FTB) upon breaking. All destructive fusion seam and extrusion seam samples met specifications.
The summaries of destructive test results for fusion and extrusion seams are presented in
Appendix K -8. The Geomembrane Record Drawing No. 5 (Appendix A) shows the destructive test
sample locations.
6.1.6 Non- Destructive Testing
Poly -Flex performed non - destructive seam testing on completed seams and geomembrane repairs.
Non - destructive testing for seams included pressure testing of fusion - welded seams, and vacuum
1 41217UW4W1Ctn- <MftNo-1024W3270.D4O& L24W.
