August 2002 -15- 003 -2203
in 2.5 Subgrade Preparation
Prior to SLF placement, Ames moisture conditioned and compacted the entire surface of the
Phase IVa Area with a smooth drum vibratory compactor. The quality of the surface was then
maintained until SLF was placed.
2.6 Soil Liner Fill
Based on neat -line survey, Ames placed and compacted approximately 52,960 cubic yards of
SLF in the Phase Wa Area. Record Drawing No. 3 in Appendix A shows the top of SLF.
Ames processed the SLF for the Phase IVa construction, beginning in April 2001 and finished
in February 2002. Ames screened the borrow material through a custom designed rotary mill
and screen to remove oversized material from the SLF.
• Ames began placing SLF in the Phase IVa Area in April 2002 and completed SLF placement in
June 2002. SLF was compacted to a minimum thickness of 12 inches by a smooth -drum
vibratory compactor. Golder observed SLF depth verification tests performed by Ames to
confirm appropriate fill depth. Any areas that were found to be deficient in thickness were
reworked and retested until the area met specifications. The SLF depth verification is discussed
in Section 4.2.6.3. SLF was moisture- conditioned and compacted as needed to meet project
specifications. The minimum SLF density was 95 percent of the maximum dry density at
3 percent dry of optimum to optimum moisture content as determined by standard Proctor tests
performed by Golder. Areas of the SLF that initially failed to meet the density requirement
were moisture - conditioned, if necessary, and re- compacted to achieve the required compaction.
There was an area of approximately 70,000 square feet that did not achieve acceptable SLF
moisture content, compaction, and gradation. The SLF was replaced with SLF meeting
specifications.
y.vo =03W4Wr-enRepoSO M2203.0",04740 u.aoo Golder Associates
