August 2002 -16- 003 -2203
Prior to geomembrane deployment on the SLF, Ames proof - rolled, compacted, and
hand- worked the fill surface to be free of desiccation cracks and abrupt grade changes. Golder
then inspected the surface. Sharp stones were removed. Locally, Ames placed fines stockpiled
from the Portland Tailing beneath Pad No. 3 to smooth the fill surface in areas that were
observed to be rough (Meteoric Water Mobility test results for the Portland Tailing were
provided by CC &V and are presented in Appendix N). Golder approved the fill surface prior to
release to Poly -Flex. Poly -Flex provided formal subgrade approval prior to geomembrane
deployment. Poly- Flex's subgrade acceptance forms are presented in Appendix G.
2.7 Ore Storage Area Composite. Liner System
The composite liner system in the Ore Storage Area (OSA) consists of a minimum of 12 inches
of compacted SLF overlain by 80 -mil single -sided textured LLDPE geomembrane, with the
textured side in contact with SLF. Poly -Flex installed approximately 1,430,000 square feet
(neatline) of geomembrane in the OSA, including geomembrane in the anchor trench and
overlap. Geomembrane installation in the OSA is discussed further in Section 3.3. Ames
anchored geomembrane at the limits of the Phase Wa Area in an anchor trench a minimum of
3 feet deep by 2 feet wide. Ames backfilled the anchor trench with suitable anchor trench
backfill material. Ames placed anchor trench backfill in maximum 12- inch -thick compacted
lifts. Anchor trench backfill was compacted with a hand- operated, 500 -1b. vibratory compactor
and "Jumping Jacks." Phase Na geomembrane was connected to the existing Phase I and
Phase I Expansion geomembrane with a minimum of 3 feet of overlap per project requirements.
2.8 Drain Cover Fill
Ames began placing DCF in the Phase Na Area in June 2002, and completed placement in
August 2002. Ames processed DCF from June 2002 to August 2002 by screening Pad No. 4
material over a vibrating one and one -half inch screen to remove oversize material from the
fill, Ames placed approximately 105 cubic yards of DCF in the OSA. DCF was placed
40 in a minimum 2 -foot thick lift over the geomembrane and in a 120 -inch thick lift where
] ; %OM201VMW adLe ogO2%03noa.oa000a740tXI oc Golder Associates
