Roads established in the western 1 /2 of the permit area are private. More recently,
landowners have established gates on the south 1 /2 of the permit area that restrict access to
vehicles to a large portion of the reclaimed area in Section 22.
Reclamation of mined areas in the western Y: of the permit area can be qualitatively rated as
average to excellent, depending on slope and aspect. South - facing areas have less
vegetation and where steep, show signs of moderate to significant erosion in places.
However, erosion is not noticeably in excess of what occurs on adjacent, un -mined lands.
Hydrologic Balance
The reclaimed mine site is generally located in Las Animas County six miles east of the
Interstate 25 Ludlow exit on County Road 44 in Del Ague Canyon. The precise description of
the permit boundary is S1/2 N 1/2, S1/2 Section 15, NE1/4 NE1 14 Section 21, Section 22
(all), T31S R63W of the Sixth Principle Meridian.
Numerous sediment ponds will remain as permanent features to complement the post- mining
land use of rangeland. The first pond encountered during the foot traverse in Section 22 is
pond 22 -1 This pond sits at the toe of a reclaimed slope. Runoff from the slope to the
south and north is diverted to this pond via small ditches along the permanent road. The
pond held a modest amount of water from recent snowmelt.
