No signage or other indication of occupation by mining or mining-related activity was noted.
Based on the results of the inspection, there is no evidence that the loadout was ever
constructed and/or used by the TBM mining operation. It is likely that the loadout was
planned and/or approved but because of the termination of operations shortly after the
original permit was issued, the loadout was likely never constructed or established.
The inspection then moved to the mine site located a few miles to the west in Delagua
Canyon. The inspection began at the western boundary of the permit area along the County
road. Due to ranchette development within the permit boundary and conflicts associated
with this land use, in 1991 the Division approved a change in the land use to residential in the
west Yz of Section 15 and Section 22. Thirty-five acre land parcels were platted both within
and adjacent to the permit area, some resulting in home construction like the one shown
below.
Many of the land parcels have been fenced, likely to exclude cattle grazing on private
property, a common activity during the summer months in Delagua Canyon. Cattle were
observed in the canyon on this day, most of them grazing the lower portion of the canyon.
Over the years, many of these land parcels have come up for sale (see below), creating an
ever-changing ownership scenario for many of the 35 acre lots. Some landowners have not
been cooperative with the Division efforts to reclaim and inspect the mine site. Locked gates
and fences have prevented Division access to some of the reclaimed lands over the years.
5
