5RT2735 (MM8261)
Site Description. This newly recorded site is an historic trash dump located approximately
three miles south of the Yampa River in a narrow valley bounded to the west by Hillberry Mountain
and the Williams Fork Mountains and on the east by a long, high, north/south-trending, uplifted
ridgeline. The site is situated on the west side of County Road. 27 on the east/southeast slope of
a long ridge/terrace between two unnamed, intermittent drainages that flow northeast to Grassy
Creek which is located about one mile away. A transmission line is just northeast of the site.
Deposition at the site is alluvium mixed with some colluvium. Vegetation includes tall sagebrush,
grasses and prickly pear cactus.
The artifact assemblage consists of 200+ fragments of purple, aqua, clear and brown bottle
glass and window glass; 50+ fragments of crockery and whiteware; four hole-in-top cans, one metal
bed frame, one metal foot arch with the word "Footeazer" on it; one horseshoe; assorted metal cans
(two lard pails, one sanitary can, corroded fragments) and other corroded metal (barrel straps, wire)
and scattered pieces of milled lumber. There were no complete bottles or jars at the site. One nearly
complete clear glass bottle has the word "PUTNAM" on the front and the letters "DR" on the back.
One broken clear glass base has the words "EX EL KANSAS CITY, MO". A search of the
General Land Office land patent information (www.glorecords.blm.gov) indicated that a patent for
the NW1/4 of SETA of Section 29, T6N R87W was issued to Kathryn F. Bruce on February 12,
1916 under the Homestead Act of 1862. Additional patents is the surrounding area were issued to
Joseph F. Bruce. No additional information was found during archival research.
Eligibility and Management Recommendations. Site 5RT2735 does not retain integrity.
The majority of the items present appear to be household refuse or items related to ranching/farming
activities. Some may not meet the 50 year age requirement for an historic site. The materials are
scattered across a moderate slope and are in a secondary context. There is no evidence of structures
or features that would suggest historic habitation at this location. The site has no known association
with historically significant events or people (Criteria A and B), no evidence of distinctive structures
or features (Criterion C), nor any potential to provide information that is not already available in
written or oral documentation (Criterion D). Therefore, MAC recommends this site as not eligible
for inclusion on the NRHP. No further work is recommended.'
5RT2736 (MM8504)
Site Description. This site is a newly recorded, prehistoric lithic scatter that measures
approximately 37 m N/S x 48 m E/W. This site is located in a narrow valley approximately 6.5
miles south of the Yampa River. It is situated on a low terrace on the southern bank of Grassy Creek
on the west side of County Road. 27. The Grassy Creek cutbank is just north of the site boundary.
A dirt road parallels the north bank of Grassy Creek about 100 m from the northern site boundary.
A shallow, unnamed, intermittent drainage runs along the southern boundary. Rolling hills and low
ridges surround the site. The Williams Fork Mountains and Hillberry Mountain are visible to the
west. A high, long ridge creates the eastern valley wall. Vegetation on-site is primarily low
z No additional information on this site was available from either the Museum of Northwest Colorado or
the Hayden Heritage Center.
33
