sagebrush and grasses. The surrounding hill tops and ridges are also vegetated by dense mountain
mahogany and oakbrush. Deposition is alluvial and sediments of up to one meter in depth are
present based on the cutbank of Grassy Creek.
Cultural material at the site includes one biface and 31 lithic flakes (three primary, six
secondary and 22 tertiary). At least seven of the flakes show some signs of burning or heat
treatment. Flake material was predominantly gray quartzite with white and gray chert and red and
tan quartzite also present. The biface, probably a projectile point mid-section, is manufactured from
gray chert.
Eligibility and Management Recommendations. This site does not retain integrity. The
artifact assemblage is small and no activity areas or evidence of intact features were visible at the
surface. Although there is some alluvial deposition present, a careful examination of the drainage
cutbanks which bound the site to the north and south revealed no artifacts or features eroding from
the drainage banks. Based on this examination of the drainages, it appears that this site is
completely surficial. There is no evidence that the deposition preserves a buried and datable cultural
level. Because of this, MAC recommends this site not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. No
further work is recommended.
5RT2737 (MM8596)
Site Description. This site is a newly recorded, broad, prehistoric lithic scatter that
measures 80 m N/S x 235 m E/W. The site is located on a slight southwest-facing slope on a terrace
on the north side of an unnamed, intermittent tributary of Fish Creek. Sediments on-site are medium
brown to grayish brown alluvial and slopewashed silts and loams. The drainage cutbanks show
alluvial sediments of up to 100 cm in depth. The site is vegetated primarily by purple thistle, bunch
grasses and forbs with some low sagebrush near the northern and southern site boundaries. Three
large swaths going generally east/west across the site have been disturbed by plows or some other
kind of large machinery. Much of the cultural material was concentrated within these disturbed
areas.
The artifact assemblage includes two bifaces, six flaked lithic tools and 85 lithic flakes.
Biface 1 is the base of a drill manufactured from tan chert. Biface 2 is a fragment composed of gray
chert. The flake tools are made of white, red, brown, tan and gray chert. Three of them have steep
scraping ends. The others are retouched along one or two lateral edges. The debitage is primarily
at the tertiary reduction stage (76 flakes) and the predominant material types are white chert and
semi-translucent white chert. Nine secondary flakes were also recorded. Other materials include
moderate amounts of gray quartzite and brown chert with small quantities of flakes made from red
chert and pink, brown, red and tan quartzite also recorded. One artifact concentration made up of
20 pressure flakes was noted in the central portion of the site. This concentration was found in one
of the disturbed areas but could indicate a distinct activity area at the site.
Eligibility and Management Recommendations. Site 5RT2737 may retain integrity. It
is situated on a terrace above a wide tributary of Fish Creek. The drainage cutbank shows alluvial
sediments of over 100 cm. During examination of the drainage, a few lithic flakes were observed
eroding from the cutbank. One possible activity area was also noted in a disturbed area. Lithic
artifacts found in the drainage bank and concentrated in disturbed areas are evidence of the potential
34
