5RT2734 (MM8189)
Site Description. Site 5RT2734 is a large open chipped and groundstone scatter. The newly
recorded prehistoric site measures 120 m N/S x 225 m E/W. It sits on the east-facing slope of a low
finger ridge and on a terrace between two small, unnamed, intermittent drainages which run
generally east along the northern and southern site boundaries. Sediments on the ridge top and in
the drainage cutbanks are dry, cracked and clayey, light colored residuum possibly mixed with some
alluvium. Granitic lag cobbles are scattered across the site area. This area was previously plowed
and has been revegetated with wheatgrasses. A few low sagebrush are found within the site
boundary. Grazing livestock have impacted the surrounding area.
Artifacts recorded at the site include two
projectile point fragments (Figure 4), seven
biface fragments, one scraper, eight flake tools,
two cores, 81 flakes, and 10 manos. The first
projectile point is a small corner-notched
specimen manufactured from white chert that
fits within the Late Prehistoric Rosegate style
(Figure 3, right). The second projectile point
consists of a base and partial blade
manufactured from tan chert. This specimen has
a slightly concave base with shallow corner
notching and a straight-sided blade (Figure 3,
left). Similar projectile point styles date to mid-
Holocene contexts that are typically associated
'th Middle Archaic sites The bifaces are all
2 CM
r ?
r ?
VV
mid- to late-stage fragments and are Figure 4 Projectile points, 5RT2734.
manufactured from white, gray and pink/white
chert and brown and pink quartzite. The scraper is a side scraper made from gray quartzite. Four
flake tools are composed of white chert; four are made from brown chert. Four of the flake tools
are retouched on one margin and four have retouch and/or use wear on two edges. The two cores
are made of green quartzite and brown quartzite. The majority of the lithic flakes at the site are at
the tertiary reduction stage, although, some secondary flakes were also recorded. The predominant
material types are white and semi-translucent white chert. Flakes made from brown and pink/white
chert and red and gray quartzite were also found. The manos range in size from 5.5 to 12 cm in
length, 3.5 to 8 cm in width and 2.5 to 6 cm thick. Most are complete manos made from quartzitic
sandstone. One was composed of granite. Grinding on the manos ranged from light to heavy and
was present on two sides on about half of the assemblage.
Eligibility and Management Recommendations. Site 5RT2734 does not retain integrity.
The surface of the site has been impacted by both grazing and plowing and artifacts have been
redeposited. No Holocene deposition is present. Sediments are residual, primarily decomposed
bedrock, and have no potential to contain intact subsurface cultural deposits below the plow zone.
The site is flanked to the north and south by shallow drainages and no cultural material was
observed in any of the exposed cutbanks. MAC recommends this site not eligible for NRHP
inclusion because it retains no integrity and exhibits no potential to preserve buried and datable
cultural deposits. No further work is recommended.
32
