MAC recommends this site not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. No further work is
recommended.
5RT2733 (MM7989)
Site Description. This newly recorded, multicomponent site consists of a moderate amount
of historic debris with a very small scatter of prehistoric lithic artifacts spread across an area
measuring approximately 125 m N/S x 170 m E/W. The site is stretched across two plowed fields
on the west side of County 'Road . 27 which travels north/south following the valley floor. It is
located on a terrace and small hill on the south side of Scotchmans Gulch. A shallow, earthen
irrigation ditch, providing good subsurface visibility, bisects the site from south to north. An old
road bed is visible in the northeast quarter of the site area. The site is located about 150 m west of
the county road. Grassy Creek is approximately % mile to the northeast. Very little deposition is
present on the hill top which is eroded and deflated. Deposition on the terrace consists of alluvial
silts. Some slopewashed sediments are present as well. Very little vegetation remains in the site
area which is located primarily in plowed fields. Some grasses and purple thistle vegetate the
drainage area.
Historic cultural material at the site includes 50+ clear, purple, aqua, brown, milk and cobalt
bottle, jar and window glass fragments; 40 + crockery and decorated porcelain fragments; wire nails;
cast iron stove parts, metal bolts, a hook, horse shoes, a chisel, a harness buckle, brackets and
mower blades; a leather strap and an aluminum screw top jar lid. About 25+ asphalt pieces were
also recorded on or near the road bed. A small prehistoric component consisting of two flake tools
composed of white chert and brown quartzite and one tertiary flake of white chert was also recorded.
Eligibility and Management Recommendations. The historic component of this site does
not retain integrity. The majority of the items present in the historic component appear to be
household refuse or items related to ranching/fanning activities. Some may not meet the 50 year
age requirement for an historic site. The materials are scattered across plowed fields and are in a
secondary context. There is no evidence of structures or features that would suggest historic
habitation at this location. The site has no known association with historically significant events or
people (Criteria A and B), no evidence of distinctive structures or features (Criterion C), nor any
potential to provide information that is not already available in written or oral documentation
(Criterion D).
The prehistoric component of this site does not retain integrity. The artifact assemblage is
small and does not meet the standard definition for a prehistoric site. No activity areas or features
were visible at the surface. The hill top is eroded and deflated and has no continuous deposition that
is likely to contain subsurface cultural deposits. The remainder of the site is located on an alluvial
terrace. Examination of the cutbanks of Scotchmans Gulch, which bounds the site to the north, and
the earthen irrigation ditch, which bisects the site, revealed no evidence of buried artifacts or
features. Based on this evidence it is apparent that the prehistoric component of this site is confined
to the surface.
MAC recommends this multicomponent site as not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. No
further work is recommended.
31
