primarily by low sagebrush and bunch grasses with some sparse mountain mahogany also on-site.
Deposition is alluvial, mixed with some slopewashed deposits from the hillslope. Sediment is a light
gray tan silt. The site has been heavily disturbed by deflation, sheetwash and slopewash erosion.
Poorly sorted sandstone and siltstone gravels are also present where parts of the site have been
deflated.
The artifact assemblage consists of 2l lithic flakes made predominantly of white chert. Small
amounts of white quartzite and gray chert were also part of the assemblage. Most of the flakes (17)
are at the tertiary reduction stage; four secondary flakes were also recorded. Much of the site has
been heavily eroded and deflated. The area is heavily slopewashed and it is likely that the flakes
that were recorded have been redeposited to their current location. No flakes were observed eroding
out of the drainages which pass through the site boundaries or out of the arroyo to the north.
Eligibility and Management Recommendations. This site does not retain integrity. The
artifact assemblage is sparse and appears to have been redeposited to this location. The site area
is heavily slopewashed, sheetwashed, and deflated. No artifacts or features were observed in any
of the three drainages that pass through or flank the site's boundaries. There is little potential that
information important to the prehistory of the area could be preserved. Therefore, MAC
recommends this site not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. No further work is recommended.
5RT2732 (MM7904)
Site Description. This newly recorded, prehistoric, open lithic scatter measures
approximately 95 m N/S x 88 m E/W. Site 5RT2732 is situated on a terrace south of an unnamed,
intermittent tributary of Grassy Creek. A shallow drainage bisects the site southwest to northeast.
Another intermittent drainage runs along the eastern site boundary. The Nofstger Zeigler Reservoir
is about 500 m east of the site. A two track road and a small stock pond are located to the north.
Fences bound the site to the west and south. The shallow deposition at the site is primarily alluvial
with some slopewashed sediments also present. The site area is eroded and has been heavily
impacted by livestock activities. The site is primarily vegetated by grasses with sagebrush in the
surrounding area.
Artifacts on the site include one biface fragment, three flake tools, 13 secondary flakes and
123 tertiary flakes. The biface is a tip fragment manufactured from reddish brown chert. The flake
tools are composed of white chert, semi-translucent, white chert and purple quartzite. The flakes
are made predominantly of white chert and semi-translucent white chert with moderate amounts of
gray quartzite and tan chert, plus small quantities of brown and gray chert. Flakes of tan, purple and
white quartzite are also present. No activity areas or features were recorded at the site.
Eligibility and Management Recommendations. This site does not retain integrity. The
site is eroded and heavily impacted by livestock. Based on the shallow cutbanks which bound the
site to the north and the east and bisect the site southwest to northeast, there is little deposition
present. In addition, no artifacts or features were found eroding from the drainage banks. Based
on careful examination of the cutbanks, it appears that this site is completely surficial. Although a
relatively large quantity of flakes were recorded, no features or activity areas were visible at the
surface. With no evidence of a buried cultural level exposed in the three shallow drainages in the
site area, it appears unlikely that this site would yield information important to the area's prehistory.
30
