We look
forward to working with Grand County (County) on the project. The Division of Wildlife (Division) has several
comments and requests regarding the Property, mostly in regards to timing and operations related to greater sage-
grouse.
The proposed County Road 3 Gravel Pit is within a half mile of an existing sage-grouse lek (breeding area).
This lek is located within the current County Road 340 Gravel Pit operated by the County. The County currently
withholds operation until 9:45 am from March 15c' to May 15th to accommodate the breeding grouse; the reason
for this is noise of operation can be detrimental to the success of sage grouse breeding. We would like the County
to maintain that accommodation to insure the maintenance of a viable sage grouse population. The Property has
an alternate lek site on it, this is where the grouse set up and strut when they get flushed from the main site. In
addition, the Property is year round sage-grouse habitat and is identified as breeding, production and severe
winter range. We have included a map of grouse radio-telemetry locations and lek sites for your information.
The County is a partner and signatory to the Middle Park Greater Sage-Grouse Plan (2001). We would like to see
native shrubs as a component to its reclamation on the new pit, and feel the sooner the reclamation happens the
less apt to have a noxious weed problem on the project.
The Division would also like to ask the County to consolidate its gravel operation by closing and reclaiming
the County Road 340 site after the County Road 3 pit is operational. The Division feels it can be reclaimed to a
condition beneficial to the sage-grouse; this would include re-contouring the site so that it would blend in with the
surrounding area, and be beneficial to the greater sage grouse that display and within the pit and nest in the
vicinity.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Harris D.
