Colowyo C-1981-019
18 June 2009
Pg 2/3
- The Prospect Pond (NPDES 007A) contained water to the weep hole and was
discharging an immeasurable trickle at the time of the inspection. There was a small
amount of sediment at the inlet but much less than has been there from the runoff
from past years. It appears that the measures implemented on the surface above
the Prospect Pond (contour ditches, repairing the riprap in the Prospect Ditch, etc.)
have been successful in reducing the sediment load to the pond. There is a small
area just below the emergency spillway that was repaired last year by Anson that
appears to have some erosion. This area does have vegetation growing on it now
but it will need to be watched. The pond embankment was well vegetated and no
erosional problems were noted besides the one mentioned above. The short road
spur up to the Prospect Pond was well maintained and stable.
- The Gulch A Pond (NPDES 004A) was not inspected.
- The Section 16 Pond (NPDES 009) was not inspected.
- The Streeter Pond (NPDES 001 A) contained water approximately 1 feet below the
top of the discharge pipe and was discharging from the weep hole on the pipe. The
discharge was clear. There was no water flowing into the pond at the time of the
inspection. The pond embankment was stable and well vegetated and no erosional
problems were noted. The large culvert that carries water from Goodspring Creek
under Colorado Highway 13 was clear at the time of the inspection (although this
culvert is the responsibility of CDOT it does get clogged up and cause water to back-
up for quite a distance). The emergency spillway was stable at the tirne of the
inspection
- The Section 28 Pond (NPDES 012A) contained a small amount of water but was not
discharging at the time of the inspection. There was a small amount of sediment at
the inlet of the pond from the runoff but this is not a problem at this time. The
vegetation (mainly the grasses) on the embankment continues to grow and should
benefit from the wet spring. There are some bare patches in the vegetation on the
embankment that may need to be interseeded this fall if they do not fill in this
summer. There were no erosional problems noted on the pond embankment and it
appeared to remain stable. The emergency spillway also remains stable.
Backfilling and Grading: - The Division has approved a backfilling and grading
schedule for the West Pit with the approval of Technical Revision 79 and the
remaining East Pit with Technical Revision 80.
- Colowyo has continued to work on backfilling and grading in the East Pit with the
101 dragline. They are walking the dragline along the highwall throwing material into
the pit taking 25 foot cuts each pass.
- Colowyo has been performing backfilling and grading operations in the Section 4
area of the West Pit (by the East Taylor Pond), although they were not working on the
area at the time of the inspection. They are using the 102 dragline to move material
into the draw when it is out of sequence in the West Pit. Currently the 102 is doing
pull-back work then it will return to this area to perform reclamation. The plan is to
keep cycling the 102 dragline between the West Pit and reclamation work in this
area.
