3). The sand and gravel deposit will be mined using front end loaders, hydraulic
excavators and trucks.
Mining will be done in phases starting with Pit #1. Pit #3 will be mined next and trucked
to Pit #2 for processing. After mining of Pit #3 has been completed, Pit #2 will be mined
next, followed by Pits #4 and #5. Pit #1 will remain open throughout the life of the
Permit and be used when hauling is restricted thru the Reid property. Crushing will occur
in all the pits except Pit #3.
The life of the operation will be from 10 to 14 years. The estimated time period to mine
each of the individual pits is as follows:
1. Pit #1-10 years
2. Pit #3-2 to 3 years.
3. Pit #2-3 to 4 years.
4. Pit #4-2 to 3 years.
5. Pit #5-2 to 3 years.
The depth of the topsoil and overburden in the pits vary from less than 6 inches in Pit #4
to 15 feet in Pit #5. The average overburden depth in Pit #3 is 9 feet. The average depth
of the gravel deposit in the pits is 25 feet with the underlying material being Mancos
Shale. Approximately 1 to 1.5 feet of gravel will be left in the bottom of the pits above
the Mancos shale to help prevent additional selenium contamination of the ground water.
The primary and only product to be mined is sand and gravel. The sand and gravel will be
used for construction aggregate for concrete, asphalt pavement, road base and pipe
bedding.
