• Hearing protection (earplugs and/or earmuffs) will be used whenever the sound level •
exceeds 85 decibels continuous or 14o decibels impulse, or when noise prevents
conversation in a normal voice at a distance of 3 feet.
• Areas of high noise should be posted with appropriate signage.
• If the noise level requires employees to raise their voice above a normal level this is an
indication that hearing protection is to be worn.
• Consideration should be given to double hearing protection (earmuffs and earplugs) for
noise levels above too decibels.
The level of PPE will be upgraded to modified Level D if necessary by the SSH©. Modified Level
D PPE is required -when potential skin and inhalation hazards exist and. the concentration(s) and
type(s) of airborne substance(s) are known to be below the Permissible Exposure Levels
(PELs)/Threshold Limit Values (TLVs). The following elements constitute modified Level D
PPE, each of which may be used as appropriate;
• Chemical-resistant coveralls.
• Gloves, chemical-resistant.
• Boots, steel toe with disposable boot covers or chemical-resistant boots.
• Safety vests (required when working in the vicinity of heavy equipment and
roadways).
• Safety glasses (required when performing activities that present the potential for
injury to the eyes).
• Hardhat (required when performing activities involving overhead hazards, includirig
all underground work).
• Earplugs and/or earmuffs (required when noise levels exceed 85 decibels continuous
or too decibels impulse).
• Face shields (required when splash hazards exist).
• Welding goggles and protective gloves and other clothing when welding.
0
