Box 1153
Meeker, Co 81641
Subject: Proposed Seeding Recommendation
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (MRCS) has evaluated the ecological site
and soils for the proposed Uric Gravel Pit. According to the ecological site and.soils of
the area the following seed mixes are recommended for drilling on this site. The NRCS
recommends that the initial planting be completely grass seed which would be followed
by a second seeding two years later consisting of a forb/shrub mix. Planting in these steps
will help the grasses to establish and create less of an opportunity for weed invasion.
The gravel pit falls predominantly within the Sandy Salt Desert ecological site. This site
receives less than 12 inches of annual precipitation. Because this site is non-irrigated the
dates of planting are critical. It is recommended that the seeding takes place in the late
fall prior to the soil freezing (Oct 15th-or later), or in the spring after the soil is dry
enough to prepare (before April 30th). For optimal establishment the seed planting depth
should be 1/4-1/2 inch.
For the uplands rangeland the NRCS recommends the following seed mix for the initial
vegetation establishment. The following rates are applicable if drilling is the method of
planting. (If broadcasting is desired than the following recommended rate must be
doubled. The area also should be harrowed following the broadcasting in order to
efficiently incorporate the seed into the soil.)
