EPA - UIC - V- Application.doc 3/5/2009 2 of 6
Decantation
The injectate is expected to decant slurry water from the sands. The decanted water will
return by gravity to the existing mine pool where it can be returned to the mill system for
re-use.
Impact on Ground Waters
Impact on ground waters is expected to be negligible. The effect of sealing existing voids
in the surface and sub-surface areas of the mine is expected to be beneficial to surface
reclamation measures, reducing surface storm water inflow to the mine and reducing the
availability of void areas where oxidation could occur causing acidic reactions with
water. The overall impact may, in fact, be beneficial to the ground waters in the
immediate area of the mine by reducing the availability of residual metals and sulfides to
come in contact with water flowing in the vein system and mined voids.
Additionally, MRV stresses that the low permeability of the fractured granite ground
mass mitigates any potential transport of the injectate, the decant water, etc. from the
mine area.
Bullet Information (as outlined in "EPA fact sheet underground injection control - Class
V - Mine Backfill Injection Well Information)
?
