Colowyo C-1981-019
20 January 20
Pg 2/4
Lt:
Hydrologic Balance (cont.): - The Gossard Pond (NPDES 003A) contained water
approximately two feet below the riser pipe and was not discharging at the time of
the inspection. The pond embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be
stable at the time of the inspection. No erosional problems noted on the
embankment at the time of the inspection.
- The West Pit Pond (NPDES 008A) was not inspected.
- The Rail Loop Pond (NPDES 006A) contained water approximately one foot below
the gated pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the
inspection. No erosional problems noted on the embankment at the time of the
inspection. There is some sediment in the pond and several large piles of coal fines
beside the pond (from the cleaning of the train tunnel). It would be advisable to
remove these piles of fines before they end up in the pond.
- The Stoker Siding Pond (NPDES 005A) was not inspected due to the snow.
- The East Taylor Pond (NPDES 01 OA) contained a small amount of water (to the
bottom of the gated valve on the bottom of the riser pipe and 7 feet below the top
of the discharge pipe) at the time of the inspection and was not discharging. The
pond embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of
the inspection. No erosional problems noted on the embankment at the time of the
inspection. The top of this pond was frozen at the time of the inspection.
- The Prospect Pond (NPDES 007A) contained a small amount of water but was not
discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond embankment was covered with
snow but appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. There were no
erosional problems noted on the pond embankment. The operator was in the
process of finishing the cleaning of the pond. Anson was stockpiling what looked like
most of the riprap that had washed into the pond and was using it to armor the edge
and inlet of the pond. Favorable weather has made it possible to complete the
pond cleaning well before it was anticipated to be completed. The contractor,
Anson, is using a long-boom excavator with a 1/2 yard bucket and several highway-
legal dump trucks for the job.
- The Gulch A Pond (NPDES 004A) was not inspected due to the snow.
- The Section 16 Pond (NPDES 009) was inaccessible and not inspected (and will
probably remain inaccessible until late spring.
- The Streeter Pond (NPDES 001 A) was not inspected. The Streeter Pond is scheduled
to be cleaned after the Prospect Pond is cleaned. The contractor (Anson) had some
equipment on the pond embankment performing work in preparation for the
cleaning.
- The Section 28 Pond (NPDES 012A) was not inspected because of the snow cover
on the Sturgeon road.
- Sump 1 was not inspected.
- Sump 2 contained water approximately two feet below the top and was not
discharging at the time of the inspection. The sump was stable at the time of the
inspection.
- Sump 3 contained water approximately two feet below the top and was not
discharging. The sump was stable at the time of the inspection.
