Colowyo C-1981-019
10 November 2008
Pg 5/6
Support Facilities: - The facilities area was in good condition at the time of the
inspection. No problems were noted with the area.
- The Gossard Loadout appeared to be stable and in good condition at the time of
the inspection. No fugitive dust coming from the coal stockpiles or stacker tube at
the time of the inspection.
Topsoil: - The topsoil stripping in the box cut and in advance of the South Taylor Pit
has stopped for the winter months. It is anticipated that the topsoil stripping
operations will continue in the spring or summer of 2009.
- The Bower Brothers and Anson topsoil stockpiles that are along the Section 16 Pit
area need to be sloped and seeded. In addition, and probably more importantly,
these topsoil stockpiles need to have a perimeter ditch cut around them to protect
the topsoil resource. Colowyo also needs to take extra care with these piles because
of their extremely close proximity to the road.
- The topsoil stockpile in the east pit (north of the final cut) has been sloped and was
seeded by Colowyo personnel last month. This topsoil stockpile also has a perimeter
ditch cut around it to help protect the resource.
General Mine Plan Compliance: - The 101 dragline is on the East Pit highwall where it
was performing reclamation (although it has not been running for several months).
- The 102 dragline was working in the West Pit removing overburden.
- The 103 dragline was working in the West Pit removing overburden.
- The 114 shovel operation was currently working on removing overburden in the
South Taylor box cut.
- The 115 excavator was loading X-Seam coal from the X-Pod area.
- The operator was dumping overburden from the South Taylor box cut in the East
Taylor fill areas.
- The mining at the Colowyo Mine appears to be progressing as discussed and
approved in the PAP.
Fish and Wildlife: There was a small herd of elk (approximately 25) on the topsoil pile
just west of the mine office. There were also numerous elk seen on the north edge of
the East Pit reclamation in the Streeter Gulch watershed. There were also several
deer seen in the Taylor draw area. Other than that, there were no other sightings of
big game on or around the Colowyo Mine.
Air Resource Protection: - The haul roads were mostly muddy and wet on both days
of the inspection so there were no problems with fugitive dust.
- There were no problems with fugitive dust at the Gossard loadout coal stockpile,
stacking tube or the haul truck unloading operations.
