Cement plugs were placed at [he
surface and the holes marked with meta] rods and tags.
This approach was approved by the United States Depart-
ment of the anterior, Rureau of Land Management.
Future exploration and drill holes will he sealed by
replacing cuttings in the hole and placing an oc[o
plug, spider plug or o[iier approved expanding plug ten
feet below the ground surface [o support a cement p]ug
to within three feet of [he ground surface. The holes
will be marked with metal rods and tags. See Figure
2.05-7 in the Final Abandonment Appendix, Volume 6.1.
The Orchard Valley West Mine entries are also designed,
located and will be constructed so as [o prevent or
control gravity discharge of water Erom the mine. Upon
abandonment, the portals and shafts will be sealed, as
• illustrated in Figure 2.05.6 in the Final Abandonment
Appendix, Volume 6A. This abandonment procedure, is
the same procedure as will be completed at the Orchard
Valley Mine.
-~ The fan shaft and intake shaft located at the fan level
at the Orchard Valley Mine have been sealed with earth
fill. The seals were completed to suffocate the mine
fire of June 1, 1986. Cas samples from the mine atmos-
phere confirm the effectiveness of these earth seals.
CG1; will permanently seal the shafts as illustrated in
Figure 7_.05.06.
The fan bench area has been sloped to prevent water
draining into the shaft seals. The mine atmosphere
will be regularly monitored For outside atmosphere
leakage to evaluate the continued effectiveness of the
seals.
Exploration drill holes in the Orchard Valley West Mine
aria will be sealed as described above. Several of the
drill holes have been completed as piezometers so that
ground ioater conditions may be evaluated.
