If determined necessary by the BLM, in areas where vehicle tracks dissect biological soil crusts, the crusts would be hand-raked into the tracks from the sides of the tracks. If BLM determines it necessary, some undisturbed biological soil crusts would be carefully raked into the disturbed soils in order to provide an inoculation source for regeneration. Project Activities and Schedule Project activities would proceed systematically through the project area. Specific activities in order of occurrence would include: 1) The construction of travel routes, ten drill sites with associated pits; 2) Mobilization of the drilling equipment, air drilling of the ten exploration holes, recording and demobilization of the equipment; 3) Plugging of the ten holes, backfilling and reclamation of the pits and reseeding of areas receiving incidental damage. Construction and drilling is expected to take approximately one month utilizing a 3 personnel crew. The duration of the complete project is projected to be about three months including mobilization and demobilization. Applicant Committed Environmental Protection Measures The specific environmental protection or mitigation measures listed below by activity or environmental resource area would be incorporated into the applicant's proposed action as integral components of the proposed project. Fire Protection • All vehicles would be equipped with fire extinguishers and shovels. • Any all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) would be equipped with spark arresters. • The following operational procedures would be followed: • All brush build-up around mufflers, radiators, headers, and other engine parts would be avoided; periodic checks would be conducted to prevent this build-up. • Smoking would only be allowed in company vehicles and/or designated smoking areas; all cigarette butts would be placed in appropriate containers and not thrown on the ground or out windows of vehicles. • Cooking, campfires, or fires of any kind would not be allowed while working in designated high-hazard fire areas. • Portable generators used in the project area would be required to have spark arresters.
