Topsoil Salvage
Limited soil is present sporadically throughout the work area. Where present, topsoil will be
salvaged and removed to an adjacent area. The area to stockpile salvaged topsoil will be jointly
identified and agreed upon by PROJECT MANAGER and CONTRACTOR prior to initiating
operations. A sediment retainment berm must be constructed around the topsoil when salvage
operations are complete. The berm must be no less than twelve inches (12") in height, with
2H:1V side slopes. Alternatively, silt fence, complying with the specifications of Task 10, Post
Construction Sediment Control, may be installed.
Surface Ripping
The entire work area will be deeply ripped following topsoil salvage. Ripping shall occur parallel
with the contour (perpendicular to the fall of the slope) throughout the area. Rippers shall be sunk
a minimum of twelve inches (12") into the ground. Rip marks on the ground shall be spaced no
less than twenty-four inches (24"), center to center.
Trash Removal
It is likely that metallic debris and miscellaneous trash will be uncovered during ripping operations.
All trash and debris encountered or exposed during reclamation construction shall be removed
from the site by CONTRACTOR, and properly disposed of in a licensed facility. Numerous roof
bolts are in place along the perimeter of the mine area adjacent to the North Fork of the Gunnison
River. These roof bolts and any rebar which also may be present will be collected and removed
from the Project Area. Rebar is protruding from the top of a concrete retaining wall located
adjacent to the railroad tracks. This rebar shall be cut flush with the top of the retaining wall. The
cut rebar shall be removed from the Project Area. The trash and debris may be stockpiled on-site
during performance of reclamation construction at a site jointly identified and agreed upon by
PROJECT MANAGER and CONTRACTOR.
Measurement and Payment
There will be no measurement for payment. Payment for this task will be reflected in a lump sum
bid under Item 2 on the Bid Schedule. This lump sum bid will cover all costs for site preparation
activities required under this Task. Payment shall be as this task is completed and approved by
the PROJECT MANAGER. Such payment shall be considered full compensation for all labor,
materials, equipment and all other items necessary and incidental to the completion of Task 2,
Surface Preparation.
TASK 3 TOPSOIL APPLICATION
Topsoil shall be excavated from one or more areas located within the Project Area. The soil will
be excavated and transported to the Work Area, where it will be evenly distributed over the entire
area.
Topsoil Excavation
Topsoil shall be uniformly excavated from the identified borrow areas. Excavation shall proceed
so that a berm is maintained between the excavation area and downslope areas, in order to
prevent runoff from migrating off of the excavation area. No excavated slope shall exceed
2.5H:1V. Upon completion of excavation, the sides of the excavated area shall be contoured to
naturally blend with adjacent, undisturbed areas. Upon completion of topsoil excavation activities,
the excavated area will be ripped as described in Task 2, Surface Preparation. After ripping is
completed, the excavation area shall be roughened and revegetated as per Tasks 4 and 6,
respectively.
Topsoil Application
Topsoil shall be evenly distributed throughout the Work Area to a depth of eight inches (8"). In
order to accomplish this, it is estimated that 6,450 cubic yards of topsoil will be excavated and
applied to the Work Area. NOTE that topsoil will be applied to a different depth at the location of
the channel to be built during performance of Task 6, Channel Construction.
6
