ASTM D 698 (standard Proctor).
1. Random Fill:
1. Random Fill shall be placed as needed to achieve the design base grades for
the ore pad
2. Condition to a moisture content which allows compaction to the required
density without an excessive amount of effort and that results in a stable non-
yielding surface.
3. Place Random Fill in 12-inch maximum loose lifts and compact to the density
specified below.
4. Soil Random Fill: Borrow materials with less than 30 percent rock materials
above 3/4-inch size and 6-inch maximum rock size shall be placed and
compacted to 95 percent of maximum dry density (ASTM D 698). Use
maximum loose lift thickness of 12-inches if using standard construction
equipment. Lift thickness may be increased if compacted with heavier
equipment, such as mine haul trucks, provided that 95 percent relative
compaction is maintained throughout the entire thickness of the lift.
•
5. Rock Random Fill: Random Fill containing more than 30 percent of material
above 3/4-inch size shall be conditioned, placed, and compacted by compactive
effort techniques. The type of compaction equipment, number of passes, and
maximum rock size and loose lift thickness shall be approved by the Owner
based on the acceptable test fill performance.
6. The Contractor will adopt methods to remove all oversize rock from the fill.
Oversize rock will be stockpiled in a location designated by the Owner.
J. Cushion Material:
1. Cushion Material shall be placed over the geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) in a
maximum of two lifts to result in a minimum 2.5-foot-thick layer after
construction is complete.
2. Condition to a moisture content which allows compaction to the required
density without an excessive amount of effort and that results in a stable non-
yielding surface.
3. Cushion Material shall be placed by dumping with trucks, loaders, or
approved equipment, at the edge of the GCL and spreading over the GCL liner
with construction equipment that exert a pressure of 8.0 psi or less when
distributed to the liner. Equipment shall not be allowed to come in direct
contact with the GCL.
4. Place Cushion Material in 30-inch maximum loose lifts and compact to the
density specified below.
5. Cushion Material shall be conditioned, placed, and compacted by compactive
effort techniques. The type of compaction equipment, number of passes, and
maximum rock size and loose lift thickness shall be approved by the Owner
Revision A
I:W I74.TDiW?epidlmntla_ I uao" U-Trc yr V222.IhHi Mgrs vn?.ooc
02223-3 January 2008
