Colowyo C-1981-019
3 June 2008
Pg 2/5
Roads (cont.): - The road in Taylor draw was a bit muddy with some small puddles of
water. The road had some minor rutting from the wet, winter weather but it
appeared to be stable and was in overall good condition.
- The road to the Anson topsoil stripping operation was closed at the time of the
inspection due to maintenance work by Anson. Anson has moved out of the lower
portion of Taylor draw where they had the road problems this spring. They are now'in
the upper part of the draw and the conditions appear to be much better. The old
haul road has been "abandoned". This area will be disturbed so reclamation/repair
of the lower haul road is not necessary.
Hydrologic Balance: - The wash bay pond (not a NPDES discharge point) contained
water approximately three feet below the top of the embankment and was not
discharging. This is a total containment pond and discharge into the Work Area Pond
triggers BTEX testing (in addition to regular NPDES testing). The operator and the
contractors use this pond for water for their water trucks. The pond embankment was
well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. No
erosional problems were noted on the pond embankment at the time of the
inspection.
- The Gossard Pond (NPDES 003A) contained water approximately three feet below
the riser pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the
inspection. No erosional problems noted on the embankment at the time of the
inspection. The emergency spillway is a 12" culvert.
- The Rail Loop Pond (NPDES 006A) contained only a small amount of water and was
not discharging. There was a lot of sediment in the pond, which will need to be
cleaned out. The pond embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be
stable. No erosional problems were noted on the pond embankment at the time of
the inspection. The emergency spillway was an open channel that appeared to be
stable at the time of the inspection.
- The Prospect Pond (NPDES 007A) contained water approximately five feet below
the top of the riser and was discharging a trickle from the weep hole at the bottom of
the discharge pipe at the time of the inspection. There was some colloidal material
on the surface of the water in the pond but the discharge looked clear. There
already appears to be a good deal of sediment in the Prospect Pond from the spring
runoff. The pond embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at
the time of the inspection. No erosional problems noted on the embankment at the
time of the inspection. The emergency spillway is an open, trapezoidal riprapped
channel. The spillway appeared to be stable and well maintained at the time of the
inspection.
- The Section 16 Pond (NPDES 009) was inaccessible at the time of the inspection due
to mud (see the information in "Roads" above for more information). The pond
should be accessible in July when the area dries out a bit more.
