L\r Or M IN REPLY REFER TO
United States Department of the Interior
's C-023703
' BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT D-047201
• , CRAIC DISTRICT OFFICE
455 EMERSON STREET
P.O.BOX 248
CRAIC,COLORADO 81626
July 16, 1985
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
423 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street I
Denver, Colorado 80203
Attention: Greg Squire
Dear Mr. Squire:
Additional requested information pertaining to the technical revision
request by Western Fuels Association, Inc., for the reorientation of their
original mine plan was received and reviewed by this office. The
information submitted by Western Fuels Association Inc. was found to be
complete and described the problem in great detail enabling us to approve
the technical revision of the Resource Recovery and Protection Plan
(R2P2). Additional comments and recommendations are as follows:
1 . ) The proposed reorientation will result in the loss of approximately
1 ,734,000 tons of coal , or 7 percent less coal than originally
projected. However, this is justified by the fact that considerably
more coal would probably be lost if the mine was not reorientated.
In addition the reorientation will reduce the possibility of injury
or loss of life of mine workers at the Deserado Mine. For example, a
tremendous amount of coal could be lost if a section of pillars
failed due to continual spalling caused by the coal cleat. This
example _is just', one possibility of several potential problems.
Consideration was, also given to the cost of timbering sections of the
mine where the problem exists. The conclusion was reached that this
alternative would` make the coal uneconomical to mine because of the
large cost that would be incurred due to the large area affected by
CONSERVE
AMERICA'S
ENERGY
Save Energy and You Serve America.
