Chapter V
Two sediment ponds were constructed, with topsoil salvaged, then spread on the
pond embankments. The embankments have been seeded.
•
f. Adit/Rock Tunnel Area.
In 1979 the tunnel face up work was done and cut areas adjacent to the area were
revegetated.
In 1980 actual mining of the tunnels began and the permanent fill area was
developed by constructing a haul road, topsoil storage area, perimeter road/ditches,
and three sediment ponds. The topsoil storage areas and pond embankments
were subsequently seeded.
By 1987 the tunnel had been driven through the B-bed coal seam to the Middle-bed
seam, and the overland conveyor system to the preparation plant had been
completed.
The overland conveyor route was regraded and seeded with the approved 8000'
seed mixture in the fall of 1987.
A fill area completed in 1987 added an additional 2.6 acres to the adit/rock tunnel
pad. The fill came from excavation of the adit/rock tunnel.
• Vegetation was removed and topsoil was excavated and stored.
An existing topsoil pile (1480 cu. yds.) located in the proposed fill area was moved
to the rock tunnel topsoil storage pile.
2. INTERIM RECLAMATION.
a. Sutey Refuse Pile.
Mid-Continent has used the Sutey refuse pile since 1985 for deposition of refuse
separated from the salable coal in the washing process. The rate of deposition of
refuse at the Sutey pile depends upon the rock material which must be separated
from the coal. That is to say, factors of nature and, to some extent, customer
preference, determine the rate of expansion of the Sutey pile.
The design and permitting of the pile has proceeded in four phases. Phasing of the
pile relates to the volume of refuse deposited.* Phases I, II and III are currently
permitted.
13
