Chapter V
planting occuring each fall. The density of planting these shrubs is about 500 per
acre. In 1980, aspen and willow seedlings were also planted. This program had to
be discontinued in 1982 due to the closing of the U.S.F.S. Mt. Sopris nursery.
Along with the seedling program and on an experimental basis, large mature shrubs.
and trees are transplanted by front loader to various spots, creating islands of
mature growth. This not only is aesthetically pleasing, but also may be a successful
method of allowing native species to multiply rapidly throughout the revegetated
area.
In 1972 a tree seedling planting program was initiated including the following types
and number of seedlings. (See Figure V-D-1 for locations).
In 1977 a special study was implemented by the company to develop a seed
mixture adapted to Coal Basin. The results of that study are as follows: (This list
was used in 1977, 78 and 79)
3 Ibs Troy Kentucky Bluegrass
10 Ibs Crested Wheatgrass
10 Ibs Intermediate Wheatgrass
8lbs Alfalfa
8 Ibs Hard Fescue
39 Ibs/Acres Broadcast
d. Portal Benches.
In preparation for the final phase of reclamation, test plots have been established to
study steep slope revegetation at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 portal bench areas.
e. Sutey Refuse Pile.
The Sutey refuse area has been in use since 1985. Construction began in 1984.
Prior to disturbance of the Sutey Refuse area all vegetation was cleared, and topsoil
salvaged. A berm was constructed around the lower toe of the topsoil pile, and the
topsoil pile has been seeded.
The conveyor right-of-way leading from the preparation plant to the refuse pile has
been seeded. The access road right-of-way has been seeded.
12
