Shortly after it was opened No . 3 <br /> was renamed the L . S . Wood Mine to honor the company ' s <br /> founder following his death in 1966 . <br /> With the demand for coal continuing to increase , <br /> the Bear Creek Mine was opened in 1970 in the Coal Basin B <br /> seam, about one and one-half miles southeast of the No . 1 <br /> Mine , and the Dutch Creek No . 2 Mine was reopened in 1973 . <br /> Time completing its full circle, Osgood ' s original Coal <br /> Basin Mine was reopened in 1974 . Many relics of an earlier <br /> mining era were found during rebuilding work in the old <br /> mine--mule shoes and harnesses , remains of old mine cars , <br /> picks , shovels , and so on. The lamphouse used in the original <br /> operation has been transported to Redstone , where it sits in <br /> the park beside the main street . An office complex known as <br /> the Coal Basin District Office was added to the bathhouse in <br /> 1974 to complement the Carbondale headquarters center . The <br /> Preparation Plant has been partially rebuilt and enlarged , <br /> and a new thermal dryer was built in 1977 (the original <br /> dryer was constructed in 1967) . Continuing additions and <br /> improvements have been made to all facilities over the <br /> years , and they are now among the most modern_ in the country . <br /> 3 .
