machinery was acquired . Initial bathing and office facilities <br /> • were built at the Redstone coke ovens , and a small main <br /> office and coal dump were constructed on the railroad east <br /> of Carbondale . <br /> The operation grew slowly but surely , as did the <br /> work force and support facilities . Bathhouse facilities <br /> were enlarged and finally relocated at the junction of Coal <br /> Creek and Dutch Creek, where the narrow-gauge railroad had <br /> doubled through two broad loops to gain altitude on its way <br /> to the original mine . To provide a uniform, truly premium- <br /> quality coking coal, the Coal Creek Preparation Plant was <br /> built at the site and began operation in 1962 . A truck <br /> service garage was also built there by the haulage contractor , <br /> • Morrison-Knudsen Company . Today the site also boasts <br /> warehouse facilities , a Mid-Continent vehicle service garage , <br /> the Coal Basin District Office , a large water storage tank, <br /> and a high-capacity electrical substation . In the early <br /> 1960 ' s a number of CF&I ' s original beehive coke ovens at <br /> Redstone were rebuilt and used briefly to produce foundry <br /> coke . <br /> In 1965 , in response to the increasing demand for <br /> Coal Basin coal , the Dutch Creek No . 2 Mine was opened in <br /> the Dutch Creek seam of coal, about 450 feet above the Coal <br /> Basin B seam being mined at Dutch Creek No . 1 (the latter <br /> being the same seam mined at the original Coal Basin Mine) . <br /> The No . 2 Mine was closed in 1966 for a variety of reasons <br /> 12 <br />
