architectural resources in the Coal Basin Mine Plan Area . A
• search of the Colorado Archaeological Site Inventory and the
Colorado Inventory of Historic Sites , as well as records of
nominations pending or on the National Register of Historic
Places for Townships 9 and 10 South; Ranges 39 and 90 West
(which encompass the entire Coal Basin Mine Plan Area)
revealed no known sites . (Appendix III-B-1)
The one site that might meet the eligibility
requirements of the National Register of Historic Places is
the old Coal Basin townsight . Accordingly, Mid-Continent
engaged the consulting firm of Powers Elevation to conduct
an initial survey and recording of the Coal Basin Townsite .
That firm concluded that the Coal Basin Townsite may meet
• the eligibility requirements of the National Register of
Historic Places . (Appendix III-B-2) .
Cultural Resources Surveys have been performed for
areas of surface disturbance during the past few years .
Those conducted in areas of the rock tunnel construction and
exploration light use roads have located no evidence of
archaeological sites . (See Appendices III-B-3 . , 4 . and 5 . ) .
Very little additional surface disturbance will be
necessary in the Coal Basin Mine Plan Area over the planned
life of the mine . Cultural resource surveys will be performed
before any further surface disturbance is accomplished .
Pending the outcome of the determination of whether or not
the Coal Basin Townsite should be subject to formal National
. Register evaluation, Mid-Continent will avoid the site .
14
