4 . Uses of the land preceding mining <br /> Records of the use of Coal Basin before the beginning <br /> • of the original C . F . & I . mining operations are non-existent <br /> or , at best , sketchy . Wildlife undoubtedly inhabited the <br /> area then, as now, and was probably hunted . <br /> Coal was first discovered in 1881 . In 1883 a <br /> wagon road was built to the site of what would become the <br /> mine and mining camp . The wagon road may have afforded <br /> access for some grazing use . <br /> Work on the Coal Basin Branch of the Crystal River <br /> Railroad, which extended from the future mine site to join <br /> the main track at Redstone , began in 1897 . The branch line <br /> was completed in November , 1900 . Some hunting was probably <br /> done to provide meat for the construction workers . <br /> • Disturbance of the land by the C .F . & I . mining <br /> operations totaled approximately 130 acres .
