The original mining operation by Colorado Fuel &
Iron Co. (C . F . & . I . ) utilized underground methods of extrac-
tion. The coal seam was drilled, then blasted . Coal was
loaded by hand on cars which were then pulled by mules to
the main "trip" , a conveyance which hauled the coal from the
mine to the surface .
The coal was then loaded onto railroad cars and
transported over a narrow gauge railroad line to the town of
Redstone , some eight miles away. At Redstone, the coal was
turned into coke. The original "bee-hive" coking ovens can
still be seen. They stand beside Colorado State Highway 133
on the west side of the Crystal River , near the present-day
Redstone .
Coal was extracted from the "Coal Basin Seam, "
also known as the "B Bed . " The C . F . & I . operation extracted
around 8 ' of the top of the seam.
